Archivist

The archivist’s field of responsibility is the preservation, care and provision of access to official documents, i.e., Government, parastatal and private collections. Private collections and personal documents of institutions, that contain historical information, are also stored.
Job Characteristics
  • Researching, appraising, as well as developing and preserving historically significant and valuable documents such as government papers, private papers, photographs, sound recordings and films.


  • Directing or carrying out the preparation of indexes, bibliographies, microfilm copies and other references to make them available to users showing historical interest.


  • Seeing to the correct and efficient management of records, created or received in organisations in various formats.


  • Advising, teaching and training researchers in the use of various aids available for research.


  • Developing filing systems for government offices and rendering control thereof.

Requirements

Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required to be admitted to South African universities, and a HIGCSE or outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, to be enroled by a South African technikon. UNAM requires a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in five subjects and a minimum of 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale.

Tertiary Education

A B.A. degree with one of the following subjects: History, Political Science, Public Administration, Languages and Cultural History can be studied at UNAM as well as South African universities. The B. Degree in Library Science and Records Management can also be completed at UNAM.
The National Certificate: Archival Studies and National Higher Certificate: Archival Studies are offered at the Technikon South Africa. Students can also complete a N. Dip. in any field at any technikon in South Africa. This is a prerequisite for the B. Tech. in Archival Studies offered by Technikon South Africa. An archivist can specialise in various directions such as records management, audio-visual archives, preservation and restoration.

Personality
The prospective archivist must have a keen interest in history, political science, and public administration, and good administration skills. The individual must also have an inquiring mind, be patient and versatile, and must be service-oriented.

Work Opportunities

Archivists can be employed by the National Archives of Namibia, institutions of higher learning or at private institutions.
