ARCHAEOLOGIST

The archaeologist collects remains from the past such as tools, works of art, dwellings and human remains, and interprets information concerning the culture, history and behaviour of human beings since the earliest of times.

Job Characteristics

  • Conducting research on the origin, development, structure, social patterns, organization and inter-relationships of human society.


  • Tracing the origin and evolution of humanity through the study of changing characteristics, cultural institutions and social institutions.


  • Tracing the development of humanity through the material remains of the past, such as dwellings, temples, tools, pottery, coins, weapons, and sculptures.


  • Extracting relevant materials, checking its authenticity, as well as researching and describing the history of a particular period, country or region.


Requirements

Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required to study at a South African university.

Compulsory subjects: None
Recommended subjects: A third language like French or German (For museums or tourism industry - South Africa)

Tertiary Education
Most South African universities offer a B. A. or B. Sc. degree, with Archaeology as a major subject. UNAM does not offer this course.

Personality
The prospective candidate should be an organized and patient person.

Work Opportunities
Archaeologists can be employed by museums , universities, government department and private research companies..
