Auctioneer

Auctioneers sell goods and fixed property by auction to the highest bidder.

Job Characteristics
  • Acting as a go-between for the best seller and the buyer.


  • Introducing each item individually to the buyers, during which they point out the good and bad qualities of each specific item.


  • Selling by auction various kinds of property, cards, commodities, livestock, art, jewellery and other objects to the purchaser who makes the highest financial bid.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a H/IGCSE Grade 12 certificate, or equivalent qualification.
 
Tertiary Education
The interested candidate will receive intensive in-service training, first as a sales clerk and then as an assistant auctioneer. This training period lasts two years where the person will familiarise him/herself with the legal aspects of buying and selling merchandise. After this period he/she can then act as an auctioneer.

Personality
Auctioneers should have good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as be creative so as to come up with good selling advertisements.

Work Opportunities
Auctioneers can be employed by auction companies/houses. Registration with the South African Institute of Auctioneers is strongly recommended.
