Cargo Controller

Cargo controllers are in charge of all goods at rail points, road transport depots, airports and quays.

Job Characteristics
  • Preparing production requirement schedules, ensuring that materials are available when needed, and keeping relevant records.


  • Preparing or assisting in the preparation of production operation schedules on the basis of customer’s orders and production capacity and performance.


  • Verifying stock, arranging deliveries, and investigating delays.


  • Keeping records of operational aspects and coordinating the timing of passengers and freight transport.


  • Directing train routines with a division or zone of a railway system and keeping related records.


  • Directing, controlling and keeping records of freight handling at a railway yard.


  • Coordinating and keeping records of operational activities concerning road transport, such as allocating and scheduling of vehicles and drivers, loading and unloading and storage of goods in transit.


  • Coordinating and keeping records of operational activities concerning air transport of passengers and freight, such as passenger lists and freight manifests.

  • Preparing reports for management.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a Grade 10 certificate, or equivalent qualification, is required. Candidates are required to write an aptitude test before they are appointed.

Mathematics (Namibia)
 
Tertiary Education
No formal training is necessary. Trainees will receive 12 months training before they are appointed as cargo controllers.

Personality
The prospective cargo controller must be reliable, motivated and be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships.

Work Opportunities
A cargo controller can be employed by TransNamib and Namport. Job prospects seem to be limited.
