Characteristics
- Compiling and examining/evaluating relevant
cartographic information.
- Planning the production of charts and maps.
- Making plans, charts and maps or map components to-be-used in determining
navigable waters and in planning marine constructions.
- Making maps and charts with a view of controlling direction and
the extent of mining.
- Analyzing aerial and other photographs, remote sensing and survey
data.
- Preparing, producing and revising topographic maps and charts,
utility maps and other thematic maps.
- Studying and advising on technical, aesthetic and economic aspects
of map production.
- Calculating costs and prices.
- Recording cartographic information, indexing and maintaining catalogue
and relevant classification.
- Maintaining technical liaison and consultancy with other relevant
specialists.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification,
or an outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required
for admission to the Cape Technikon.
Compulsory subject:
Mathematics (South Africa)
Recommended subjects: Physical Science and Geography (South Africa)
Tertiary Education
A N. Dip.: Cartography is offered at the Cape and Pretoria Technikons.
The course duration is three years, of which two years is theory and
one year is practical training. No such training is currently offered
in Namibia.
Personality
A prospective cartographer should have an aptitude for drawing, good
spatial perception and be able to work with detail.
Work Opportunities
Government departments, municipalities, mines and other private institutions
employ cartographers. Carthographers can be self-employed or work on
a contract basis for various institutions.
