Job Characteristics
- Treating patients on the principle that a
person’s health is determined
largely by the nervous system, and that interference with this system
impairs normal functions and resistance to disease.
- Conducting physical examinations and treating illnesses
and injuries.
- Using X-rays to help locate the source of the
patient’s difficulties.
- Using manipulative therapy together with adjunctive
therapies such as acupuncture and ultrasound.
- Prescribing compiled diets, exercise, supports and
rest to patients.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification,
is required to be admitted to South African technikons.

Mathematics, Physical Science (South Africa)
Recommended subject
Biology (South Africa)
Tertiary Education
The Technikons Natal and Witwatersrand offer a five-year chiropractic
course. The M. Tech.: Chiropractic degree will be awarded after the
successful completion of the fifth year of study. A one-year internship
must be completed by candidates after successfully completing their
studies.
After completion of the internship, chiropractors must register
with the Chiropractors, Homoeopaths and Allied Health Professions Council
to enjoy full professional status in South Africa.
No training is currently offered in Namibia, but professionals who
would like to practice in Namibia, must be registered by the MHSS in
terms of the Allied Health Services Professions Act.
Personality
The prospective chiropractor should be emphatic, observant and have
good hand dexterity. He/she must have an ability to work with detail.
Work Opportunities
The prospective chiropractor can be employed at research and health-service
institutions. Self-employment is a viable option.
