Clergyperson/Chaplain

Clergypersons or religious professionals are responsible for the spiritual well-being of people. Their function is to minister divine service through the observance of orderly worship, prayer, sacriments, preaching and teaching according to God’s word;

equipping moral and ethical followers for works of spiritual service for the edifying of the body of believers, encouraging personal and corporate spiritual growth through worship, fellowship, discipleship, loving service and outreach in the hope of leading people to salvation.

Job Characteristics
  • Teaching people by work and example how to live according to the doctrines of the faith.


  • Being involved in helping to minister to the needs of people in the community and encouraging other believers to do the same.


  • Perpetuating sacred traditions, practices and beliefs.


  • Conducting religious services, rites and ceremonies.


  • Undertaking various administrative and social duties, including attending committees and meetings of religious organizations.


  • Providing spiritual and moral guidance in accordance with the religion professed.


  • Propagating religious doctrines in the own country or abroad.


  • Preparing religious sermons and preaching.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required to be admitted to South Africa universities.

A HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with five subjects passed and at least 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale, is needed to be admitted to UNAM.

NETS (Windhoek) requires a pass of two Grade 12 subjects to be accepted for the diploma: Theology and a pass of Grade 10 to be accepted for the Bible programme/diploma.

Tertiary Education
A B.Th. or B.A. (Religious Studies) can be obtained after four years at UNAM. South African universities offer a three-year or four-year B. Th. or B. D. degree.

  A N. Dip.: Theology or a Pastoral Certificate (which is usually the choice of the church) can be obtained after a four-year course at Paulineum in Windhoek.

NETS (Windhoek), an evangelical interdenominational theological seminary, provides biblical, theological and pastoral training at certificate, diploma and degree level.

Personality
The prospective candidate must possess leadership qualities, the ability to speak in front of people, power of reasoning and knowledge of human nature. He/she must also be spiritually mature.

Work Opportunity
Clergypersons/chaplains can be employed by churches, missions, prisons, hospitals, mental institutions and the military.
