Construction Supervisor

Construction supervisors are responsible for the co-ordination of work of subcontractors, and the planning and administration of sites.

Job Characteristics

  • Reporting to the construction manager.


  • Administering, co-ordinating and controlling building projects from inception to completion.


  • Identifying problems and taking correctional action in potential problem areas and representing the company on the site.


  • Planning the layout of sites.


  • Determining and programming the correct sequence of tasks to be performed, so as to ensure construction in the most economic way.


  • Supervising the entire project in collaboration with the foreman, who is working under his/her supervision.


  • Consulting with management, professional team members, subcontractors, building foremen, trade overseers, etc..

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE or outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required to be admitted to South African technikons.

For studies at the Polytechnic of Namibia candidates must have at least passed five subjects on IGCSE/HIGCSE level and have obtained a minimum score of at least 25 points on the Polytechnic’s point evaluation scale.
 
Compulsory subjects
Mathematics and Physical Science (South Africa)
Mathematics and a Physics-related subject (Polytechnic)
 
Tertiary Education
The N. Dip.: Building in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management are offered by various technikons throughout South Africa. These courses take three years to complete.

Candidates who are in possession of a relevant National Diploma can enrol for the B. Tech. or M. Tech in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.

The Polytechnic does not offer these courses, but the closely related N. Dip.: Engineering: Civil also prepares candidates adequately.

Personality
The prospective candidate should be calm and able to handle conflict, should it arise amongst co-workers. He/she must also have good interpersonal skills, and be prepared to work under pressure, since time limits play a major role.

Work Opportunities
Construction supervisors are employed by building contractors, or they can start their own business if the appropriate finances is given, and with the necessary experience.
