Data Typist and Typist
A data typist "keys in" information from a source document,
by means of a keyboard, into a computer.
The typist transforms the original-
or draft material into final, neat and legible letters, articles or documents,
by means of a typewriter or word processor.

Job
characteristics
- Entering numerical and other data from source material into the computer.
- Entering data from source material in the form of perforations on cards
or paper tapes, by using scanning and other devices.
- Ensuring that source document, computer files and equipment are saved and
stored.
- Typing correspondence, business forms and other documents on a word processor.
- Planning and executing the layouts and format of documents, if not pre-set.
- Altering, rearranging, correcting and editing typed text.
Requirements
Secondary Education
An IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required to be enroled
at the Polytechnic. Possession of at least an IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent
qualification, is expected to be admitted to private colleges for typing/secretarial
training. To further studies at NAMCOL a background of typing is expected.
Tertiary Education
A candidate can complete a certificate or diploma in Secretarial Studies
at the Polytechnic or other training institutions or receive in-service
training at a private institution.
Personality
The candidate should have good language abilities, hand-eye coordination
and concentration ability. Accuracy and tidiness are also important requirements.
Work Opportunities
Data typists and typists can be employed by various public, private and
semi-private organizations. Typists can advance to receptionists, private
secretaries, etc..
