Characteristics
- Driving a delivery van to transport freight or mail between depots and
loading/unloading points.
- Paying due regard to traffic, traffic regulations and time schedules.
- Assisting with or performing loading and unloading tasks.
- Checking the general condition of the vehicle (light, oil, brakes, etc.).
- Receiving and countersigning delivery notes, and at times receiving money
for delivered goods.
Requirements
Secondary Education
A Grade 10 qualification is recommended. Candidates should be in possession
of a valid Code 08 or Code 11 driver’s licence and a sound driving
record.
Tertiary Education
No specific education requirements can be stipulated, but a driver should
at least be able to write legibly and make easy calculations.
Personality
Attentiveness, good judgement and reliability are the trademarks of a
good delivery-van driver.
Work Opportunities
Opportunities exist at most small-, medium- and large-sized companies.
Specialised courier services are offered by a diverse range of transport
and delivery-service companies, such as Cross Country Carriers and Transworld
Cargo. Self-employment is an option with sufficient funds and experience.
