Domestic Worker

Domestic workers sweep, vacuum-clean, wash and take care of household linen, purchase supplies, prepare food, serve meals and perform other domestic duties.

Job Characteristics
  • Dusting and polishing furniture, sweeping and vacuum-cleaning floors and other floor coverings, washing windows and other fixtures, and making beds and changing linen.


  • Washing, ironing and mending linen and other textiles.


  • Preparing meals, serving dishes and drinks, and washing dishes.


  • Performing duties such as answering the telephone and doorbells, feeding pets, watering plants and flowers, and gardening.


  • Taking care of children

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
No specific educational requirements have to be fulfilled to be a domestic worker. Some form of education is, however, recommended.

Home Economics (South Africa)
 
Tertiary Education
Not applicable; informal on-the-job training is provided.

Personal Requirements
The domestic worker should be friendly, helpful, and able to work with Children and be reliable.

Work Opportunities
Work opportunities exist at various households and a good, reliable domestic worker is always high in demand.
