Financial and Investment Manager

Financial and investment managers plan, direct and coordinate the financial operations of an enterprise.


Job characteristics

  • Assessing the financial situation of the enterprise, preparing budgets and reports, as well as controlling various financial operations.


  • Controlling expenditure and ensuring the efficient use of resources.


  • Establishing and directing operational and administrative resources.


  • Planning and directing daily operations.


  • Obtaining information about the financial circumstances of customers and companies in which investments may be made.


  • Analyzing market trends of securities, bonds, stocks and other financial instruments, including foreign exchange.


  • Advising on and participating in the negotiation of terms for loans and placement of stocks and bonds in the financial market in order to raise capital for customers.

Requirements

Secondary Education

A HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption must be obtained in order to be admitted to a South African university, whereas a HIGCSE or outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is needed for enrolment at a South African technikon.

Possession of a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with 25 points on the UNAM or Polytechnic’s point evaluation scale is required for admission to these institutions.

Compulsory subject

Mathematics and/or Accountancy (some South African universities)

Recommended subjects: Business Studies and Economics (South Africa)

Tertiary Education
A B. degree with Management Science and Accountancy as majors can be followed at UNAM. A course in Management Science can also be completed at this university. Similar courses are offered by most South African universities.

Technical courses in Financial and General Management are offered at the Polytechnic of Namibia and some South African technikons.

Personality

The prospective financial and investment manager should have a numerical aptitude and be detailed and accurate.

Work Opportunities
The prospective financial and investment manager can be employed by large companies. Self-employment is a viable option if sufficient experience has been gained.
