Florist

A florist designs bouquets, shoulder-sprays and sheaves of flowers, and also sells flowers, bouquets and plants to clients. The florist gives advice on how to care for plants and flowers and on the decoration of flowers and plants for a variety of gatherings and festivities.

Job Characteristics
  • Taking orders for bouquets and plants over the counter or phone.


  • Helping clients to make a choice between the variety of possibilities.


  • Ordering the right amount and type of flowers from the floriculturist.


  • Treating flowers to ensure maximum water absorbency.


  • Seeing to it that bouquets are delivered on the right time at the right place.

  • Seeing to it that the shop has sufficient stock like plants, oases, baskets, ornaments, cards, glass vases, etc..


  • Handling all managing and administrative tasks, like bookkeeping, sending out accounts, writing invoices, etc..

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
No specific educational qualifications are required.
 
Tertiary Education
Candidates usually receive in-service training. Technikon SA offers a certificate in commercial floristry. The Centurion Technical College in South Africa presents a short course in flower arranging. Similar part-time courses can also be followed in Namibia.

Personality
The prospective candidate must have a love for and interest in flowers and plants. He/she should also be creative, have an artistic aptitude and a refined atonement for colour and business skills.

Work Opportunities
Florists are employed by florist shops, they can start their own business, or they can work on a contract basis and do flowers for weddings, anniversaries, dinner parties, etc..
