Geographer

Geographers study the relationship and interaction between mankind and the environment. A geographer focuses on the scientific study of physical, chemical and biotic features that make up the characteristics of land surface, oceans and climates.

The dynamic forces are brought into line with economic, social, and cultural processes, as initiated by mankind. On grounds of this broad perspective, geography contributes towards the establishment of viable strategies concerning the long-term sustainable use of the world’s resources.

Job Characteristics
  • Scientifically studying physical and climatic aspects of areas and regions and correlating these findings with economic, social and cultural activities.


  • Explaining and trying to alleviate ecological/biological problems such as erosion, decertification, nature conservation and the ecological impact of developmental activities.


  • Explaining and alleviating socio-economic problem areas such as urbanization and population growth.


  • Planning and implementing strategies to address socio-ecological issues, mostly in an advisory capacity.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required for admission to South African universities. Possession of at least a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in five subjects and a minimum of 25 points obtained on the UNAM point evaluation scale, is needed to enrol at UNAM.
 
Compulsory subjects
Mathematics, Biology, other Science subjects and Geography (South Africa)
 
Tertiary Education
Geography can be taken as major subject for a B.A. or B. Sc. degree at most South African universities. Specialized training is possible through postgraduate studies. UNAM offers a four-year B.A. degree with Geography as major subject, as well as a recently launched Masters degree.

Personality
The prospective geographer should be a scientifically-minded and independent person, who possesses good interpersonal skills and is creative.

Work Opportunities
Geographers are mostly employed in education, but also by urban and rural planning firms, environmental consultants and as specialists in projects such as ecological impact studies.
