Geohydrologist

Geohydrologists are mainly responsible for the scientific investigation and evaluation of underground water resources.

Job Characteristics

  • Exploring ground-water by means of geophysical techniques.


  • Investigating the occurrence and exploitative possibilities of ground-water in different geological formations.


  • Investigating the quality of ground-water and study the behaviour of ground-water systems by means of mathematical models and statistical analyses.


  • Rendering expert advice to institutions and users of ground-water.


Requirements

Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is needed to study at South African universities.

Compulsory subjects
Mathematics and Physical Science on HIGCSE level (South Africa)

Tertiary Education
Most South African universities offer a B. Sc. degree with major subjects like Geology, Physics and Mathematics. To register as geohydrologist a B. Sc. Honours degree in the above-mentioned subjects or B. Sc. Honours degree with Geohydrology and Applied Geophysics is required. These honours courses can be studied at South African universities.

Personality
Prospective geohydrologists should have a keen interest in physical and mathematical sciences, good observation skills, and should be computer-literate.

Work Opportunities
Geohydrologists are employed by NamWater, in the Namibian Government and at municipalities.
