Job Characteristics
- Patrolling and maintaining the natural reserve
game parks.
- Ensuring protection against poachers.
- Assisting with the conservation of animal life.
- Enforcing natural conservation laws, rules and regulations
for the preservation and/or recovery of natural ecosystems.
- Catching and resettling of game.
- Delivering technical assistance to nature conservation
researchers and officials.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification,
with matriculation exemption is required to study at a South African
university. A HIGCSE or outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification,
is needed to proceed with studies at South African technikons.
UNAM
requires an IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification with at least
a C-symbol in Biology and Mathematics, and not less than a D-symbol
in Physical Science or Chemistry.
For studies at the Polytechnic of
Namibia candidates must have at least passed five subjects on IGCSE
level and have obtained a total score of at least 25 points on the
Polytechnic’s point evaluation scale. Candidates wishing to enrol
at this institute will also be subject to an additional screening process,
encompassing a week of practical exercises and tests.

Tertiary Education
Most South African universities offer a B. Sc. degree course, related
to environmental conservation. The Universities of Stellenbosch and
Pretoria offer a B. Sc. (Hons.) in Nature Conservation and B. Sc. in
Wildlife Management, respectively.
UNAM offers a four-year B. Sc.- degree in Rural Resources and Conservation
(Wildlife and Ecology Management).
South African technikons offer a N. Dip.: Nature Conservation, while
the Polytechnic offers the N. Dip.: Natural Resource Management (Nature
Conservation).
Personality
The prospective candidate must have a love for nature. He/she must
be able to communicate well with other people, be a hard worker and
also be able to adjust to the quiet life of being out in the field
all day. He/she must also possess good physical health, be of practical
inclination and willing to work irregular hours.
Work Opportunities
Game rangers can be employed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism
and the National Parks Board.
