Introduction

As Chief: Vocational Counselling Service and on behalf of all the staff members of the sub division: Vocational Counselling Services of the Ministry of Labour, I would like to say a few words about "Careers in Namibia - 2000/2001", the second Namibia-own career guide.

As in the years past a stream of Namibia school-leavers will have to venture forth onto the path to adulthood - attempting to seek out a promising niche in the world of commerce or the labour market, in vocational schools or academies of higher learning.

" What should I study for, which trade or career should I follow?" "What are the opportunities open to my child?" Such are the burning issues on the minds of countless youngsters and their anxious parents.
" Careers in Namibia - 2000/2001" is designed to provide useful answers to a host of question, to equip prospective students or job-seekers in their quest for selecting the most promising options available to them.

It’s pilot predecessor "Careers in Namibia - 1998" was published two years ago and focused on a Namibian labour situation which, after 10 years of independence, could no longer be effectively served by South African career information. Feedback regarding the guide proved to be very positive and encouraged us to attempt the revised edition.

In trying to improve the first edition, we had to largely rely on its users and interested parties. It was due to their relevant feedback and cooperative assistance that one can speak of the revised edition as an improved one. To this effect I like to thank all persons and organisations concerned for their valuable assistance. I should also like to thank all staff of Vocational Counselling Services for their hard work and dedication.

Allow me to stress the point that we can never talk about the perfect Namibian career guide, but that the challenge lies in the continuous quest for perfection. We should thus be grateful to receive suggestions for the next edition, once this guide is published. They can be address to:
