Characteristics
- Preparing and presenting lectures and conducting tutorials, seminars
and laboratory experiments.
- Preparing, evaluating and marking examinations.
- Stimulating discussions and independent thought among students and guiding
students in their independent research efforts.
- Attending seminars, symposia and conferences and thus coming into contact
with experts in his/her field of specialization.
- Participating in decision-making processes concerning the college or university,
departmental, budgetary and other policy matters.
- Assisting with extra-curricular activities such as sport and cultural events.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Possession of at least HIGCSE Grade 12,
or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required
to gain admission to South African universities. Possession of at least
a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in
fivesubjects and 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale, is needed
for admittance to UNAM.
As a rule, prospective lecturers should also be prepared to specialise
in their chosen field of study.
Compulsory subjects
Vary according to the study direction.
Tertiary Education
Advanced, postgraduate tertiary qualifications are required for lecturing
(preferably a Master’s degree or doctorate). The field of specialization
will depend on the individual’s choice.
Training regarding the
principles of lecturing and tuition is mostly received on the job, whilst
formal courses in ‘Adult Education and Tertiary Education’ can
be followed at various South African universities (such as Cape Town,
Natal, UNISA, Witwatersrand and Pretoria).
Lecturers are expected to
constantly better their qualifications in order to acquaint themselves
with development in their field of study.
Personality
The prospective lecturer should be intelligent, responsible, tactful
and patient. He/she should also be scientifically-oriented, have good
communication skills and be a people-oriented person.
Work Opportunities
Opportunities exist at colleges, technikons, and universities. With sufficient
experience a lecturer can also give private classes.
