Mail Handler

The mail handler’s tasks include the processing, sorting, collecting and recording of mail. Mail handlers are divided into the following categories: driving, delivery and sorting.

Job Characteristics
  • The driving mail handler does the driving, collecting and delivering of mail in mail bags to and from post offices, mail centres, street postboxes and depots, and transporting the mail by means of vans and trucks.


  • The delivery mail handler delivers mail from post offices or mail centres.


  • The mail handler on sorting duties processes mail in the post office and large mail centres. Mail is sorted manually or by machine.


  • Sorting and keeping simple records of incoming and outgoing correspondence and dispatching outgoing mail in various establishments.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a Grade 10 certificate, or equivalent qualification. For the driver mail handler, the minimum requirement is a Grade 10 certificate, or equivalent qualification, and a valid Code 08 driver’s license.
 
Compulsory subjects
English, Afrikaans and an African language (South Africa)
English (Namibia)
 
Tertiary Education
Actual in-service training is provided during working hours. Private study is encouraged to be considered for promotion and transfer to other divisions.

Personality
The prospective mail handler must be responsible, punctual, physically fit and have good communication skills.

Work Opportunities

Mail handlers are employed by post offices throughout Namibia.
