Matron

Matrons organize, supervise and carry out housekeeping functions in hotels, clubs, boarding schools, hostels and other residential establishments and institutions as well as in private households.

Job Characteristics
  • Engaging, training, discharging, organizing and supervising workers employed as domestic personnel.


  • Delegating responsibilities such as the upkeep of gardens, furniture and buildings.


  • Purchasing or controlling the purchase of food and other household supplies.


  • Controlling storage and issue of supplies.


  • Working out menus.


  • Seeing to it that the kitchen and laundry runs smoothly.


  • Supervising general welfare and conduct of individuals in institutions.

  • Assisting in cases of minor injury of illness by performing tasks such as taking temperature, giving medicine, putting on bandages, etc..

Requirements

Secondary Education

The minimum educational requirement is a Grade 8 certificate, or equivalent qualification. Higher qualifications are, however, preferred.

Tertiary Education
No formal training exists, but in-service training is given to prospective matrons.

Personality
The prospective candidate must have a strong sense of responsibility, friendliness and diligence. The candidate must posses managerial and supervisory skills, and be authoritative. An interest in household and people is also necessary.

Work Opportunities
Matrons are employed by schools, technikons, universities, residences, children’s homes, homes for the aged and any other hostels.
