Characteristics
- Dressing in sample clothing of new or current styles or of type wanted
by customers.
- Walking, turning and otherwise demonstrating style and other characteristics
to his/her best advantage.
- Posing as models for artistic photography, sculpture or painting.
- Posing as models for photography or films in the field of advertising.
- This is usually done on a part-time basis, while still at school or university
but, it can also be a full-time career.
Requirements
A prospective candidate must be tall with a good physique
and exceptional features. Women must be between 1,73 m and 1,82 m tall, and be
between 15 and 20 years of age when they engage in a modelling career and must
not be bigger than a size 34.
Men must not be shorter than 1,82 m, must be between
18 and 30 years of age when they start modelling, and must have a number 32 waist
size and 38-40 chest size.
A model must have a good and healthy skin, teeth and
hair.
Secondary Education
No specific educational qualifications are required. Since this exciting
career can last 10 to 15 years only, it is advisable if the model obtains
some sort of tertiary education. This will improve his/her chances of
getting another job when he/she stops working as a model.
Tertiary Education
No formal tertiary education exists in this field. Various modelling
agencies and schools do offer 2 month courses, which includes ramp work,
photographic modelling, exercises, make-up, TV advertisements, hair,
skin and body care, professionalism, etc.. Good first impressions are,
however, essential in this competitive industry.
Personal Requirements
A prospective candidate must be determined, perseverant,
patient and be able to put in long hours.
Work Opportunities
Models that have potential are employed by modelling agencies.
This is, however, one of the most competitive careers. A model can start
with an own modelling school if sufficient funds are available.
