Job Characteristics
- Fitting the lenses according to the person’s
needs.
- Applying certain processes in order to make the
lenses suitable for a particular person’s needs.
- Repairing damaged glasses, frames and preparing contact lenses.
- Examining the lens for defects in the glass, curve, thickness and size
of glass, then cutting the lens with a machine to produce the prescribed
curve as well as buffing and polishing it.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Although there are no specific education requirements, employers usually
prefer a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification.
Recommended subjects
Mathematics, Physical Science and Technical Drawing
(South Africa)
Tertiary Education
Duration of the in-service training period is three to five years,
where the student works under the supervision of a qualified technician.
Personality
The prospective optical technician should have the following qualities:
good eye-hand co-ordination, accuracy, good vision, a sound mechanical
aptitude and manual dexterity. He/she should have patience and be a
perfectionist, as only perfect results are acceptable.
Work Opportunities
Optical technicians are employed by optical laboratories, manufacturers
of optical instruments and in private practices. Work opportunities
are limited as only a few candidates are taken in per year (one or
two for training) by private practitioners.
