Optical Technician

Optical technicians prepare lenses according to prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists. The optical technician studies the prescription carefully to decide on the raw materials to be used and the processes to be followed.

Job Characteristics

  • Fitting the lenses according to the person’s needs.


  • Applying certain processes in order to make the lenses suitable for a particular person’s needs.


  • Repairing damaged glasses, frames and preparing contact lenses.


  • Examining the lens for defects in the glass, curve, thickness and size of glass, then cutting the lens with a machine to produce the prescribed curve as well as buffing and polishing it.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Although there are no specific education requirements, employers usually prefer a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification.
 
Recommended subjects
Mathematics, Physical Science and Technical Drawing (South Africa)

Tertiary Education
Duration of the in-service training period is three to five years, where the student works under the supervision of a qualified technician.

Personality
The prospective optical technician should have the following qualities: good eye-hand co-ordination, accuracy, good vision, a sound mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity. He/she should have patience and be a perfectionist, as only perfect results are acceptable.

Work Opportunities
Optical technicians are employed by optical laboratories, manufacturers of optical instruments and in private practices. Work opportunities are limited as only a few candidates are taken in per year (one or two for training) by private practitioners.
