Physiologist
A physiologist is a scientist who studies the functioning of living creatures
under normal and abnormal conditions, in order to solve specific problems
of everyday life. Physiology is regarded as an applied science and
forms the basis for further training in medicine, veterinary science,
pharmacology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing.

- Studying the internal working of organs, energy extraction, energy usage,
blood circulation, healing processes, reproductive processes, etc., in
humans and animals.
- Studying and conducting experiments concerning the life processes and functions
of human, animal or plant organs, tissues, cells, glands and systems under
various conditions.
- Developing industrial, medical and other applications of obtained knowledge.
- Studying everything that influences the normal functioning of the body
of a human, plant or animal, including nutrition, digestion, absorption,
metabolism and disease (pathology).
Requirements
Secondary Education
A HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption
is required for studies at South African universities. To gain admittance
to UNAM, students must be in possession of a H/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent
qualification, with at least a C-symbol in Mathematics on IGCSE level,
as well as a minimum of 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale.
Compulsory subjects
Mathematics, Biology or Physical Science (South Africa)
Mathematics with at least a C-symbol on IGCSE level (UNAM)
Tertiary Education
A B. Sc. degree in Physiology can be followed at most South African universities.
UNAM offers a related B. Sc. degree in Molecular and Physiological Biology.
Personality
The prospective candidate should be accurate, methodical, and have an investigative
frame of mind.
Work Opportunities
Very limited opportunities exist at medical and general research institutions.
