Porter

Porters undertake door-keeping duties in apartment houses and other buildings, attend to parking places, watch houses and other properties to prevent illegal entry or theft and detect fire or other hazards, collect tickets, etc.

Job Characteristics
  • Door-keeping in hotels, helping guests, especially on their arrival and departure, with luggage, keys etc., supplying information about entertainment, restaurants, transportation and other matters.


  • Door-keeping in apartment houses and other buildings, checking the right-of-entry of callers and giving them requested information.


  • Watching houses and other properties to prevent illegal entry or theft, fire or other hazards.


  • Making periodic inspection tours, examining doors, windows and gates, watching for any irregularities, such as broken water pipes and fire hazards.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of a Grade 8 certificate, or equivalent qualification, is recommended, although no minimum qualification is required. Candidates must be able to read and write.
 
Tertiary Education
Tertiary education is not formally provided but candidates receive in-service training.

Personality
The prospective porter should be responsible and healthy, thus physically fit to work for long hours. He should also be friendly and willing to assist where required.

Work Opportunities
A porter can be employed by hotels, hospitals, apartment buildings, etc..
