Post Office Clerk

Post office clerks deal directly with clients of the post office by rendering services like selling stamps, receiving postal articles and handling saving accounts. Clerks in the offices are doing bookkeeping, receive telegrams and perform various other clerical duties.

Job Characteristics
  • Selling stamps, registering and fast-mailing envelopes and parcel containers.

  • Paying out money, postal orders and pensions to clients.


  • Receiving mail over the counter, effect money or telegram transfers.


  • Advising clients on services.

Requirements

Secondary Education
Possession of at least an IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required to be admitted for in-service training.
 
Recommended subjects
Mathematics and Accountancy (South Africa)
 
Tertiary Education
Prospective post office clerks will receive in-service training.

Personality
The prospective post office clerk should have an aptitude for language, a numerical ability and a good memory, as well as be honest, reliable, neat and in possession of good communication skills.

Work Opportunities
Post office clerks are employed by Nampost. Job prospects do not seem very favourable.
