Characteristics
- Managing the organisation’s production line to ensure that the
highest production standard is maintained.
- Taking part in decisions concerning the layout of the enterprise, the
size and range of the product or service to be rendered, the design and
organization
of the work processes, work standards and compensation of the employees.
Directing daily operations
Reviewing the results and reporting them to directors and chief executives.
Requirements
Secondary Education
A HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption
is required to be admitted to South African universities. A HIGCSE or
outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is needed for
enrolment at a South Africantechnikon.
UNAM requires a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade
12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in five subjects and a minimum
of 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale.
For studies at the Polytechnic
of Namibia, candidates must have at least passed five subjects on HIGCSE/IGCSE
level and have obtained a total score of at least 25 points on the Polytechnic’s
point evaluation scale.

Tertiary Education
Degrees in Industrial Engineering or any qualification such as a B. A.,
B. Com. or B. Admin. degree can be followed at most South African universities.
UNAM offers a B. Com. degree, which could be relevant to the career of
production management.
The N. Dip.: Production Management is offered at several South African
technikons. Alternatively, a N. Dip.: Commerce can be obtained from the
Polytechnic of Namibia.
Personality
The prospective production manager should be a practical problem solver,
who is able to maintain good interpersonal relations.
Work Opportunities
Production managers are employed by factories and manufacturing organizations
in the private sector.
