Sales Representative

A sales representative introduces his/her company, goods or services to the potential customers in such a way so as to convince/persuade them to place orders for these goods or services.

Job Characteristics
  • Soliciting orders and selling goods to retail, industrial, wholesale and other establishments.


  • Selling mechanical equipment, supply and related services to business establishments or individuals.


  • Providing prospective customers with general and specialized information about the characteristics and function of the equipment, and demonstrating its use.

  • Reporting customers’ reactions and requirements to manufacturers.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required by most employers.

Business Studies and Economics (South Africa)

Tertiary Education
Sales representatives mainly receive intensive in-service training. Sales-technique courses can be followed via the correspondence route. A sales aptitude is, however, only developed through experience in the work situation and depends totally on the individual him/herself.

Personality
The prospective candidate should have a neat appearance, good communication skills, an enthusiastic personality and hold the attention and interest of his/her client.

Work Opportunities
Sales representatives can be employed by companies or firms that develop or sell goods and services.
