Shop/Counter Assistant

A shop/counter assistant helps clients in shops, supermarkets and other enterprises. The shop/counter assistant forms an important link between the business and its customers and is therefore crucial for the maintenance of customer support.

Job Characteristics
  • Ascertaining the nature and quality of the product desired by the customer.


  • Quoting prices, credit terms and discount.


  • Packing and arranging goods to be delivered.


  • Writing bills, invoices, dockets or receipts.


  • Moving goods to be sold from storage area to sale area and placing them on display.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
Most employers require at least an IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, whilst a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is recommended depending on the type of article that is being sold.

Tertiary Education
Shop/counter assistants generally receive on-the-job training, whilst additional courses can be followed to a person’s own advantage.

Personality
The prospective shop/counter assistant should be able to maintain good interpersonal skills, as manifested in sincerity and friendliness towards customers. Stamina and the ability to work under pressure are also important. He/she might have to work during weekends and public holidays.

Any shop or store that sells products directly to the public employs shop/counter assistants.
