Training Officer

Training officers plan, organize, implement and control the overall training programs of different trades to ensure the effective transfer of specialized skills to trainees and other employees in order to contribute to improving production levels and efficiency of workers and organizations
Job Characteristics
  • Assisting line management in identifying and solving performance problems of workers in industrial, commercial or government organizations through training and development interventions.


  • Maintaining a high standard and a good quality performance in vocational instructions and exerting effort to develop and practice professionalism, dedication, responsibility and commitment.


  • Developing various training interventions ranging from courses to individual development opportunities, by structuring course contents and learning opportunities to develop competencies in learners.


  • Managing apprenticeship programs, conducting specialized training sessions and on-the-job learning opportunities.


  • Overseeing and evaluating their training efforts by measuring the progress of learners and improvements in organization performance.

Requirements

Secondary Education
No specific minimum entry qualification is required, since various training interventions exist on different levels. A HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required to be admitted to South African universities. A HIGCSE or outstanding IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is needed for enrolment at a South African technikon.

UNAM requires a HIGCSE or IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in five subjects and a minimum of 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale. For studies at the Polytechnic of Namibia, candidates must have at least passed five subjects on HIGCSE/IGCSE level and have obtained a total score of at least 25 points on the Polytechnic’s point evaluation scale.

Tertiary Education
The B. Admin. or B. Com course can be followed at UNAM for four years. The same degrees can be followed at any university in South Africa. RAU offers a two-year part-time and one-year full-time Honours course in Human Resource Development, suitable for those who have obtained a B. A. degree.

This university also offers a Certificate in Training and a Master Certificate in Training and Development, while the University of Stellenbosch offers an Honours and Masters degree programme in Human Resources Development.

Most technikons in South Africa as well as the Polytechnic offer the N. Dip.: Human Resources Management.

The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) offers a correspondence course for training officers. This is a three-year diploma in Personnel Management.

Personality

The prospective training officer should be capable of organizing, planning, motivating, controlling and communicating with people. He/she must possess very good language abilities and be adaptable to different people and situations.

Work Opportunities

Training officers are employed by government ministries, municipalities, private companies and non-governmental organizations. Experienced and well-qualified training officers can also act as consultants. Job prospects seem to be favourable.
