Translator

A translator is an authority on a particular language concerning all its grammatical and idiomatic uses and rules. He/she is also well-acquainted with a second language and usually translates written material from this language into the language he knows best.
Job Characteristics
  • Translating from one language into another and ensuring that the correct meaning of the original text is retained and that legal, technical and scientific works are correctly rendered.


  • Ensuring that the phraseology and terminology of the spirit and style of literary works are conveyed as far as possible.


  • Developing methods for the use of computers and other instruments to improve the accuracy and quality of translations.

Requirements

Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required to study at South African universities. A HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with passes in five subjects and at least 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale, is required for admission to UNAM.

Compulsory subjects
Good marks in two or more languages (South Africa)
Good marks in English, as well as two others indigenous languages (Namibia)

Tertiary Education
UNAM offers a B. A. degree in Languages. South African universities also offer the degree course B. A. (Languages). Potchefstroom University for CHE offers the only undergraduate degree in Translations Studies.

Postgraduate studies in translation are specifically offered by the following South African universities: RAU, UNISA, Stellenbosch and Witwatersrand.

The N. Dip.: Language Practice is offered by the Technikons Cape, Setlogelo, Pretoria and Free State. These courses take three years to complete.

Personality
The prospective translator should have an excellent command of languages, should be able to grasp complex and subtle verbal concepts and should have patience and a good memory.

Work Opportunities
Limited opportunities exist in the private and public sector, but translators can work on a freelance basis operating from their homes.
