Valuer
A valuer establishes the monetary value of property, merchandise, business assets
and various kinds of goods such as pieces of art, precious stones, motor vehicles,
as well as personal and household articles. He/she does this by establishing
the most readily comparable facts and by examining them with regard to conditions
and authenticity.

Job Characteristics
- Determining the quality or value of raw materials,
real estate, industrial equipment, personal and household articles,
work of art, gems, estates
of deceased persons and other objects offered for sale or to be insured.
- Assessing the extent of damage or loss and liabilities
of insurance companies and underwriters for losses covered by insurance
policies.
Requirements
Secondary Education
Possession of at least a HIGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification,
is needed to be admitted to a South African university. A HIGCSE or outstanding
IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, is required to be admitted
to a diploma course at a South African technikon.

Tertiary Education
UNISA offers a B. Com. degree with Business Economics as a major, specializing
in Real Estate as a compulsory subject. Various university degrees are
recognized, but the candidate must be registered with the South African
Council of Valuers as a valuer-in-training.
The Technikon South Africa offers a N. Dip.: Real Estate (Property Valuations)
through correspondence and on a part-time basis. The Technikons: Natal,
Witwatersrand and Cape also offer this course on a part-time basis.
No training is currently offered by a Namibian institution.
Personality
The prospective valuer must think clearly and logically to gather, coordinate
and analyze information precisely and accurately. He/she must possess
unquestionable integrity and should also have a technical inclination.
Work Opportunities
Valuers can be employed by financial institutions, property development
companies, private practices and government departments.
