Waiter and Bartender

Waiters, waitresses and bartenders serve food and beverages in commercially-operated dining and drinking places, clubs, institutions and canteens, on board ships and on passenger trains.

Job Characteristics
  • Serving food and beverages.


  • Advising on the choice of wines and serving them.

  • Serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at a bar.


  • Responsible for laying and clearing of tables.

  • Taking orders and working out accounts.

Requirements

Secondary Education
No formal school qualification is required to be a waiter or a bartender, but the person is required to read, write and understand the English language.

Tertiary Education
No formal tertiary education is required but in-service training is provided at the relevant industries. Waiters and Bartenders can complete the Food and Beverage Service Skills course offered by the HTC. The four-week training course should be followed by in-service training presented by registered establishments.

Personality
The prospective waiter and bartender should be in good physical condition, friendly and be able to communicate well with people.

Work Opportunities
The prospective waiter and bartender can be employed at hotels, bars, restaurants, take-aways, etc..
