Zoologist

A zoologist studies all aspects of animal life with regard to form, function and behaviour. The field of zoology is very diverse and some specialization areas are: Ecology (environmental dynamics), Entomology (the study of insects), Ichthyology (the study of fish) and Ornithology (the study of birds.)

Job Characteristics

  • Describing new species or details of their anatomy, so that they can be placed correctly in the evolutionary series.


  • Studying the basic aspects of animal life such as the structure, life processes, behaviour, growth and habitat of animals.


  • Studying the inter-relationships of animal life and environmental factors.


  • Preparing and submitting reports on research findings and developing relevant applications of the knowledge obtained.

Requirements
 
Secondary Education
A HIGCSE Grade 12, on equivalent qualification, with matriculation exemption is required to study at South African universities. To gain admittance to UNAM, students must be in possession of a HIGCSE/IGCSE Grade 12, or equivalent qualification, with at least a C-symbol in Mathematics on IGCSE level, as well as a minimum of 25 points on the UNAM point evaluation scale.

Mathematics and Physical Science on HIGCSE level (South Africa)
Mathematics with at least a C-symbol on IGCSE level (UNAM)

Recommended subject
Biology (South Africa) 
 
Tertiary Education
A B. Sc. degree with Zoology as a major can be followed at most South African universities, while UNAM offers a B. Sc.: Biology degree. The minimum requirement to work as a zoologist is a B. Sc. degree with Zoology as a major, but a B. Sc. Honoursdegree is recommended.

Personality
The prospective candidate should be of an observant, patient nature, with the ability to work accurately.

Work Opportunities
Opportunities exist at academic institutions and at the Ministries of Environment and Tourism, Agriculture, Water and Rural Development, Health and Social Services and with nature conservation bodies. Zoologists with relevant experience can operate as private consultants.
