Hai Ti! Glossary Hai Ti Comics will occasionally use words, expressions and acronyms which may be strange or new to you; either because you're not familiar with Information and Communication Technologies or because you're not familar with Namibia, it's culture or its Free and Open Source (FOSS) movement! For example, "Cuca Shop", which features prominently in the launch edition of Hai Ti! mean "Shebeen" (an Irish word!) -- an unlicensed house selling alcoholic liquor. (It would be fantastic if someone would post "Cuca Shop" to Wikipedia, the free online Ecyclopaedia!) Hai Ti! is unique in being the first publication of its kind to be published under international Creative Commons rules in Namibia!

The latest release of Direq OpenLab version 3.2.8 is an absolute WOW! Especially with the new Wikipedia (meeting the overwhelming demand for a FOSS digital encyclopaedia), and some fantastic learner/learning management and examination tools to complement the upgraded Learnthings and Educational Playground resources (covering core subjects from grade 1 - 12, in GCSE key stages). The WWW Internet Mathematics Server (WEMS) is a fantastic interactive resource base, the typing tutor has been upgraded, the Open Office suite has been upgraded, and both Schoolnet and EDSNET resource web sites now have icons on the default desktop (The latest EDSNET resource CD from NIED has also been integrated in this new version). Cubit Accounting is a FOSS accounting tool which can be used in the classroom and for school administration purposes. KDevelop provides a rich variety of programme languages (C++, Pascal, PHP and many more!). The Gutenberg Project provides several thousand popular copyleft textbook and classic literature resources in text-printable and html formats. The teacher-oriented self-guided IT-literacy training modules (EDN) now work without the need to go on the internet (Certification will be available through University of Natal, SA early in 2005). There are many, many more resources in this new release, and the entire package has been made far more intuitive with the help of some pedagogical moderators locally and abroad. SchoolNet's website provides an educational portal to a huge variety of educational tools, games and other resources for teachers and students. SchoolNet ISP internet clients also have access to Learnthings on line. |
