Introduction
Best Practices Project
This "living" HTML document was
developed during the last year of our service. The three
of us were all PC IT volunteers in group 20 and had sites
in Northern Namibia. We wanted to develop a document summarizing
the best practices that we had found during our service
so that subsequent IT volunteers would not have to "reinvent
the wheel". Peace Corps Namibia gave us the support
we needed to achieve this goal. We chose to create the
document in this format because we did not want it to be
considered complete and all-inclusive. We hoped to provide
a logical, flexible framework that future IT volunteers
would continue to amend.
In general, we found the schools in
the North eager to embrace computers in the curriculum,
but there was no clear direction from the Ministry of
Basic Education, Sport and Culture regarding IT education
in the Secondary Schools. As we began this task in earnest
we learned that the MBESC was developing an ICT Policy
for Education. We were able to review a preliminary copy
(Proposed August 2004) and found it to be a well thought
out practical approach to ICT education in Namibia.
Based on our experiences, we think
the best way for IT volunteers to support the MBESC goals
is to act in the capacity of IT advisory teachers for
all schools in an area, rather than devoting their time
to personally teaching the learners at a single school.
We developed this document to support that task.
