Kids on the Block Volunteer Program

SchoolNet Namibia’s Kids on the Block program has two streams: hardware and software.

Computer Literacy:

The computer literacy training program consists of a ten week course in the basics of computer use, and is suitable for those interested in teaching, tutoring or sharing their skills with others.
It covers computer theory, hardware and vocabulary, as well the basics of using a personal computer: office suite applications, email and web browsers. Classes run daily, Monday to Friday, for one hour. It is taught by SchoolNet training Volunteer Selma Tjiveze. Four new sessions begin May 10th, 2005. Tuition is free. At the conclusion of the training program, trainees who have performed satisfactorily may be given the chance to work as a resident trainer in a school serviced by SchoolNet Namibia. Accomodation, meals and a small stipend will be provided for the length of the stay, which is typically no shorter than one semester.

Hardware and Operating Systems (OS):

The hardware/OS training program is for unemployed youth who like to work with their hands,
use their minds and learn about the ins and outs of computers. Through a combination of theoretical and practical instruction, trainees learn the fundamentals of hardware, diagnostics, hardware refurbishing, server configuration, LAN construction, wiring, and the basics of networking. Workshop manager Bornface Musweu or training coordinator Aune Hendrick teach one hour, five mornings a week for a month. Classes begin April 15th, 2005. Tuition is free.At the conclusion of the training, eligible applicants may be invited to be paired with one or two knowledgeable technicians – themselves graduates of the hardware training program – to form a team that will be dispatched to install networks in schools. Stellar performers may be asked to join the technical squad on a full-time, fully paid basis, but only after considerable merit, effort and dedication has been shown.

How To Apply:

Applicants must come to SchoolNet Namibia, on the ground floor of the Katutura Community Arts Centre, on Leonard Auala Street, between Shoprite and Independence arena. They must bring a Curriculum Vitae (CV), their Grade 10 or Grade 12 certificate, two passport photos, and a copy of their ID or birth certificate.
